Young Africa Botswana is delivering a 24-month project, in partnership with Youth Business International, to support young entrepreneurs to recover from the economic impact of COVID-19. Funded by the Standard Chartered Foundation, the project is part of Futuremakers by Standard Chartered, a global initiative to tackle inequality.
Young Africa Botswana will provide a holistic package of support including Business One-Stop-Shop, Aspiring Entrepreneurs Program and Star-up Growth Program to 1000+ entrepreneurs across Botswana. We will specifically target underserved entrepreneurs between the ages of 18-35 who have been hardest hit by the crisis.Â
Youth Business International and Standard Chartered Foundation are working together to provide crucial support to over 33,000 underserved young entrepreneurs in six countries across Africa, Asia and Europe.
Futuremakers is a global initiative by Standard Chartered to empower the next generation to learn, earn and grow through programs focusing on education, employability, and entrepreneurship.
Futuremakers Botswana is a 24-month program designed to develop youth entrepreneurship in Botswana. The program is facilitated by Young Africa Botswana, in collaboration with the Standard Chartered Foundation and Youth Business International. Futuremakers seeks to support young entrepreneurs in recovering from the economic impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic.Â
Futuremakers Botswana was one of the first Futuremakers projects and started in 2019. Futuremakers Botswana wants to target young people aged 18-35 years old, who want to make the step and start their own business (aspiring entrepreneurs) and start-up businesses (1-3 years). This program aims to ensure that underserved business owners from vulnerable and marginalized groups such as women and people with visual impairments, and people with disabilities are included.
A lot of young people in Botswana have learned to hustle and are making a small living out of it. Formalizing the business is often the goal. There is a huge entrepreneurial spirit in Botswana, but hardly a realistic view of what it is and what is needed to be an entrepreneur.
Last year Futuremakers has shown that there is a need for a basic understanding of the principles of setting up and doing business. Developing a business plan, doing market research, procurement, marketing, sales, and finance. Funding the business is also something that needs to be guided. Despite the fact that there are multiple stimulation schemes for young people to start up a business, a lot of ideas die in vain. Applications are difficult and tedious and need guidance. An application can only be good if the applicant has a basic understanding of setting up a business. That is why Futuremakers Botswana wants to put their effort into aspiring entrepreneurs, who are at the start of setting up a business, even before they apply for any funding scheme.
The Business One-Stop Shop is specifically designed to be a dynamic space for young entrepreneurs to use for their benefit. We offer one-on-one consultations, business information resources, co-working space, and free WiFi.Â
